The Harford Artists’ Association incorporated as a Non-Profit 501(c)(3) in 1967. In 2009, HAA partnered with the Town of Bel Air to use the cottage at Rockfield Manor and the Harford Artists’ Gallery was established. 2016 saw the Gallery move to its current location in Armory Marketplace, the Reckord Armory’s converted garages which are now incubator spaces, anchoring the north end of the Bel Air Arts and Entertainment District.
The new location is affording HAA many opportunities to showcase the amazing talent that the area nourishes. One event that is seeing a revival is Take a Chance on Art (formerly Addicted to Art). The lottery-style art auction, held March 23 at the Bel Air Armory, will begin at 4pm with music, wine, finger food and, of course, art! The event will culminate with the lottery drawing of numbers at 5pm. Each number called will correspond to the number on each $75 ticket purchased. Additional tickets for those wanting to enjoy the evening and see the fun of the lottery without taking home a piece of art will be $25.
Many of the pieces of artwork are valued at hundreds of dollars and have been graciously donated by HAA members. The artwork includes original paintings, photography, artisian jewelry, hard shelled gourd art, pottery and giclée reproductions. The money raised on March 23 will be used to further HAA’s non-profit 501(c)(3) goals of promoting the visual arts in Harford County through workshops, seminars and community events.
Guests check off their first and second choices on their programs, hoping that their selection will be available when their number is called. As the lottery drawing begins, the room is filled with anticipation, which continues to build as the artwork is selected by each lottery ‘winner’. The evening ends at 7pm as each guest leaves with their prize. What makes the event unique is that every numbered ticket holder is a winner!
