where local music comes to play! by larry noto, music land
Every new song starts with a blank piece of paper.
And that’s exactly where Blank Slate got the inspiration for its name.

The band name didn’t just align with the writing process. It also referred to the band’s mission to produce music that was fresh and like nothing being played currently.
Blank Slate was formed last spring when Keller met guitarist Matt Bressler and drummer Tyler McDonough at a local open mic night. Bassist Kevin Long would join the band shortly after.
“We got together at my house and I showed them some of the songs I had written and they liked them,” recalled Keller. “We’ve written songs together and have also reworked songs I had previously written on my own to fit our sound and style as a band.”
At a recent Blank Slate performance, I attended at The State Theatre in Havre de Grace (the band is one of the venue’s most popular acts), you could tell the crowd followed the band closely – from Blank Slate t-shirts being worn to cheers when an original song would start to be played.
The band’s most popular song is “Take Hold.” “It’s about wanting someone to love you unconditionally, the way you feel that you love them – having an unbreakable bond with someone and never wanting to let go.”
The band can be seen at The State Theatre again in January 2021 and their debut album “For the Record” will be released in January as well. You can hear their songs played on 91.1 WHFC or on iTunes and Spotify. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram @blankslatebandoffical.
That blank slate might just be filling up after all.
