Kayaking: Social Distancing on the River
As the weather warms up, and the Stay-at-Home restrictions are relaxed, we’re all eager to get outside and enjoy the many parks and waterways in Harford County. Kayaking is a great way to get some sun and exercise while enjoying the beauty of nature. Originally developed by indigenous peoples for hunting on inland lakes, rivers and the sea, kayaks are lighter, more easily maneuvered and faster than canoes.
Recreational kayaks range in size from 8′ up to 20′, and can weigh as little as 30 pounds. Because you don’t need a truck for transport or other special equipment, kayaking can be completely spontaneous: just pick up and go! Typically, you ‘wear’ your kayak – sitting in the cockpit, protected from sun and wind by the deck covering, and armed with a double-bladed paddle. With much less effort than required to paddle a canoe, gliding through the water in a kayak can be both relaxing and invigorating. It’s another way to ‘get away from it all’, feeling ‘one’ with the water.

Whether for contemplative meandering along the water, or for adrenalin-charged challenges in less-than-calm waters, to discover fishing spots, kayaking connects us with nature in unique ways. Although kayaking is most often considered a personal endeavor, many models today have a double cockpit for family enjoyment.
